A room-by-room downsizing plan for Kemptville-area retirees

Andrew Inderwick 6 min read

For many retirees, downsizing is less about the house and more about the life that comes next: fewer stairs, no yard work, and energy for the things you actually enjoy. The trick is to treat downsizing as a project with a plan, not a weekend free-for-all.

Here is a room-by-room approach that works, shaped by years of helping Kemptville and North Grenville clients move into 55+ living.

01 Start with the room you use least

Basements, attics and guest rooms hold the most stuff and the least emotion. Begin there. Decide what gets stored, donated, passed to family or sold, and give every box a firm destination. Momentum builds quickly when you finish a whole room.

02 Measure the new kitchen before you pack the old one

A retirement apartment kitchen is efficient, not enormous. Measure the counters, cupboards and drawers of your new suite first, then keep only what fits. Everyday dishes, a good set of pots, and the small appliances you actually use are the keepers. The rest can find a happy second home with family.

03 Paper, photos and keepsakes: the sentimental pass

Give paperwork its own session: tax returns, warranties and bank documents can often be scanned, and the originals stored in one tidy file. For photos and keepsakes, keep the pieces that spark joy when you see them daily, and pass the rest along with a story attached. Sending family photos out into the world is a gift, not a loss.

04 Furniture that earns its place

Walk through the new floor plan and decide what actually fits and what you will really use. A favourite armchair, the bedroom suite and one good table usually anchor a new home. Large sectional sofas and bulky entertainment units are the hardest pieces to place; consider them first.

05 Time the move to reduce stress

Give yourself permission to take months, not weeks. Donating and handing items down in stages is kinder than a frantic last purge. And when moving day comes, knowing where every box will land in the new suite removes most of the anxiety.

06 Get help from someone who does this daily
